Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are often rooted in very complex emotional issues including a low self-esteem. Pervasive social messages that equate happiness and love with thinness, or food with love, are commonly involved. Depression and anxiety are usual threads that are linked to eating disorders. Patients often require both medical management and psychological treatment. Eating disorders many times surface in adolescents and continue for years before detection or recovery. They are quite often complicated by substance abuse because many rely on the use of chemical substances to facilitate weight control and to combat mood swings.

Most serious eating disorders can be extremely dangerous. They often cause permanent physical damage, and too often become deadly. The sooner diagnosis occurs and appropriate treatment is initiated, the better the chance of success at overcoming the problem.
