Eating Disorder Clinic: Anorexia Bulimia

Overview: CBC Therapy Program in a Nutshell

Our innovative method of therapy allows us to utilize the horse as a potent psychological tool to aid in the treatment of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. Our therapy process is especially effective for those conditions complicated by drugs and/or alcoholism. We also treat primary substance abuse and conduct disorders. Utilizing Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, a brief therapy approach, we are able to reach the complicated areas of emotional and mental turmoil rapidly and effectively. This critical initial phase coupled with traditional counseling based on a theoretical matrix promoting a method of "mega-counseling" resulting in a more thorough and lasting effect. Spiritual based instruction completes the healing process over time. Our aim is to become "Weller than well".

As acute symptoms abate, patients are evaluated for long term therapy needs. When deemed appropriate, they are placed in the Own Your Own Horse program. They learn to help start their young horse in a round pen using the resistance free gentling approach of the horse whisperer. This process teaches them to become their own horse whisperer. They also learn to feed, stall and otherwise care for their horse. Under the coaching of a professional they and their horse develop the skills required to show their animal in their chosen discipline. We will then facilitate them getting to appropriate shows. Under the guidance of our veterinary specialists we have hand selected our remuda of mares and a signature stallion to breed a family of horses especially suited to this work. They are not only beautiful and athletic but of a kind and trustworthy nature.

Long-term aftercare can include continued involvement in horse showing, and related activities. We also offer family trips to our Yellow Jacket Ranch for vacations or spiritual retreats where advanced trail riding, campfire groups, big game watching and other activities occur.

The over-all experience not only leads to recovery and wellness but also promotes opportunities to envision careers in counseling, veterinary medicine, horse training, breeding farm management and dozens more. The owners, Dr. Kathy Cadwalder and Nathan Ingram , encourages an interest in going to college to pursue this as a career. As patients learn the valuable principle of helping others in order to help themselves, a career in one of the helping professions becomes an exciting option.
