Substance Abuse CADWALDER'S PROGRAM FOR CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY The late Dr. Roger Cadwalder's life experiences combined with nearly forty years of constant study and therapy delivery have given him a unique and clearly defined understanding of the nature and treatment of alcoholism or other chemical addictions. The Cadwalder philosophy has been instrumental in the effective treatment of adolescents and adults for more than Thirty years. We are delighted to offer this program as part of Cadwalder Behavioral Clinics in Tomball, Texas. The aim of treatment is not only stopping the abuse of chemicals but also helping to remove the desire to use them. And further yet to achieve a positive lifestyle. The process is called "Beyond Abstinence" and the ultimate achievement, " Weller than Well". Addiction is never simple. Breaking a dependency on chemicals, being comfortable without them and achieving a happier, fuller life requires more than simply not drinking or using drugs. The characteristics that make us human (physical, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual) are all affected by this abuse. The influences on our human traits exerted by these drugs are always negative. Also, families are torn apart, health is compromised, businesses fail, legal issues occur and even death is possible. Fortunately, treatment can and does work to restore one's normal functioning. It becomes evident as sufferers reach the high level of sobriety we call "Weller than well". The Beyond Abstinence program emphasizes traditional therapies integrated with positive lifestyle changes and coping mechanisms. This dramatically increases prospects for successful, long-term recovery. As part of the recovery program patients learn to cope with stress, develop high self-esteem, stay fit, eat right, learn the art of loving, and improved spiritual sensitivity. Coupled with the Beyond Abstinence philosophy is a firm belief in utilizing the twelve-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous, a highly effective approach for achieving long-term abstinence. This has been proven over and over again in the great experimental laboratory of human existence. Aftercare is a critical component of the Beyond Abstinence approach. Wellness, lifestyle enhancement and personal effectiveness are major components. Our aftercare program endorses the wisdom of many successful persons in recovery who, in addition to their twelve-step program and spiritual growth, apply the acronym, HALT, as a tool for preventing relapse through wellness. Sobriety is enhanced by not becoming too Hungry, too Angry, too Lonesome or too Tired. To meet the goals of HALT, The Cadwalders developed the Six Pathways
to Wellness and Wellbeing. These pathways are best defined as lifestyle
changes that create health. "Healthstyle" is the word coined
by The Cadwalders to describe the new way of life. The Six Pathways to
Wellness and Well-Being include:
The dynamics and coping skills of this enriched lifestyle promotes, not only a cessation of chemical use, but indeed, in time can eliminate craving episodes altogether. This concept offers a powerful deterrent to relapse. The Halt component provides an answer to Hunger by weight control and balanced body chemistry through sound nutritional counseling; to Anger through stress management tools; to Loneliness through self-assertiveness and communication skills leading to meaningful relationships and fellowship; and to Tiredness through physical fitness provided through appropriate exercise. Spiritual sensitivity provides integration and aids in the daily maintenance of our Healthstyle, and over all well being. Another unique component of treatment at CBC includes equine assisted behavioral therapy whereby we integrate the horse as an aid to the program of recovery. It allows us to penetrate the areas of mental turmoil more rapidly than with traditional counseling methods alone. Horse involvement becomes a powerful catalyst for attaining the high-level of sobriety that we are seeking. Finally, we add the healing dimension of learning to ride, groom and care for a horse. This also provides a strong deterrent to relapse, especially with younger people. Our Beyond Abstinence Program holds with the notion that a complete revision
of an addict's approach to health and life must be elevated. After many years
of treating such patients Dr. Cadwalder has become convinced of this axiom.
The program embodies the need to seek and demand that a higher level of sobriety
must be achieved. Under this scenario recovering addicts will attain an exemplary
lifestyle, not just average. For example, they must be more honest, more sincere,
more loyal, more loving and certainly more spiritual than the lives of the
average person. Physical health must be attended, cigarette smoking ought
to cease, blood pressures should be attended, cholesterol levels should be
maintained, obesity and its attendant diseases should be properly addressed,
and on & on. In short, a person seeking the level of sobriety we espouse
should truly lead a more enriched life in all respects. Such ideals can begin
during treatment and be embraced as goals for the rest of one's days. This
embraces the idea of "Weller than Well". Sobering up is just the
first step towards becoming healthier and more complete in all respects. Eating disorders are often complicated by substance abuse, or vice versa. We specialize in treating those so afflicted. Please call or otherwise contact us if you, or someone you love is seeking help for a life that is "sober, joyous and free".
